What’s the Difference Between Singlemode and Multimode Fiber?
The biggest difference comes down to how light moves through the cable. At a high level, OS2 is a singlemode fiber, while OM4 is a multimode fiber
OS2 Fiber (Singlemode)
OS2 fiber has a very small glass core, around 9 microns. Because the core is so narrow, light travels in a single straight path with very little distortion. That allows the signal to stay strong and clear over extremely long distances.
OM4 Fiber (Multimode)
OM4 fiber has a larger core, around 50 microns. Instead of traveling in one straight line, the light reflects and bounces through the cable in multiple paths. This works well over shorter distances, but over longer runs the signal can begin to spread or blur, which limits performance.

OS2 Fiber: Built for Long Distances
OS2 fiber is designed for long-haul connectivity and campus-style environments. It’s commonly used for:

- Outside plant (OSP) installations
- Long-distance backbone infrastructure
Depending on the equipment being used, OS2 can support runs from 10km to 40km, and even farther in specialized environments.
OM4 Fiber: Designed for Shorter Runs
OM4 fiber is typically used inside buildings and data centers where distances are much shorter. It’s ideal for:
- Server-to-switch connections
- Data centers
- Telecom rooms
- High-speed internal networks
OM4 generally supports up to 400 meters at 10Gbps and around 100 meters at 40Gbps or 100Gbps. For most commercial buildings, that’s more than enough.
Cable Cost vs. Equipment Cost
One thing that catches people off guard is that the fiber cable itself isn’t always the expensive part. In many cases, OS2 fiber is actually less expensive than OM4 cable. The difference comes from the electronics connected to it.
- OS2 Singlemode systems require more precise laser-based optics. These transceivers tend to cost more because they’re designed for long-distance communication.
- OM4 uses less expensive LED or VCSEL-based optics, which helps reduce hardware costs across large internal networks. That’s why OM4 is often the more cost-effective option for office environments with hundreds of shorter connections.
Color Coding Makes Identification Easier
In structured cabling environments, fiber is usually color-coded for quick identification. It’s a small detail, but one that helps simplify installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance over time.
- OS2 fiber is typically yellow
- OM4 fiber is usually aqua (and occasionally violet in certain environments)
Which One Is Better?
The honest answer? Neither. The better choice depends entirely on the environment and long-term goals of the network. OM4 is often the right fit for internal building infrastructure, data centers, shorter high-speed connections, and organizations looking to reduce hardware costs. OS2 makes sense for campus environments, building-to-building connections, long-distance backbone cabling, and future-focused infrastructure planning.
In many structured cabling projects, both types of fiber are used together , with OM4 inside the building and OS2 connecting buildings or supporting the backbone.
