Axiom Goes Green

Environmental issues are a growing focus for many industries, and the cabling and fire containment industries are no exception. Axiom actively pursues environmentally-responsible solutions for our clients through the following channels:

USE OF LIMITED COMBUSTIBLE CABLE

Limited Combustible Cable (LCC) is cable that is insulated with a synthetic material called fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP). Axiom encourages all clients to consider using LCC both for life safety as well as environmental advantages. As a benefit to the environment, most LCC:

  • Does not contain any substances or components regulated under the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste from Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives.
  • Is free of heavy metals and ophthalates.
  • Is free of hazardous substances such as PBB and PBDE.
  • Is compliant with California Proposition 65 (requires no warning labels on product).
  • Offers more complete recyclability of both copper and plastics at end-of-life.
  • Contains post-industrial recycled content today, with options for post-consumer content in the future.
PROPER DISPOSAL OF DECOMMISSIONED CABLE AND INSTALLATION WASTE

Decommissioned cable and installation waste can pose an environmental hazard when landfilled or improperly recycled. Incorrect incineration of cabling to separate copper from plastic insulation and jacketing materials can pose serious environmental risks.

Axiom disposes of all decommissioned cable and installation waste using environmentally responsible methods. We utilize a network of waste management providers that convert end-of-life cables and installation waste into reusable copper and separated plastic streams.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Improving the energy efficiency of data centers and other structured network operations is a fundamental way that the cabling industry can have a positive effect on the environment. Axiom offers a wide range of options for long term reduction in energy consumption including:

  • Design Initiatives
  • Architectural Specifications
  • Hardware Selection
  • Hardware Power-Saving Utilization
  • Power Consumption Optimization
LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN® (LEED) CREDITS

LEED® is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. A number of the environmental measures described above may help contribute toward LEED® credits in several key Materials and Resources (MR) categories of The Green Building Rating System as outlined by the U.S.Green Building Council (USGBC).

New Construction and Commercial Interiors (1 point each)
MR 2.1 Construction Waste Management 50%
MR 2.2 Construction Waste Management 75%
MR 3.1 Resource Reuse 5%
MR 3.2 Resource Reuse 10%
MR 5.1 Regional Materials 20% (Manufactured)
MR 5.2 Regional Materials 50% (Extracted)

Existing Buildings (1 point each)
MR 1.1 Construction Waste Management 50%
MR 1.2 Construction Waste Management 75%
MR 2.1 50% Materials Manufactured within 500 miles

In additional to the LEED® points outlined above, Axiom installs LEED®-compliant, water-based firestop products that are classified as low-emitting VOC adhesives and sealants. Use of these materials may contribute one additional point toward LEED® certification under section IEQ 4.1.
